Many communities are opting to go for do-it-yourself broadband schemes, as they get tired of waiting for the bigger operators to bring it to them. Several different schemes are occurring all over the country, ranging from smaller twenty household schemes up to the larger schemes involving half a million households.
Several of the do-it yourself broadband schemes are being planned with the help of the council, in laying fibre to the homes of people who want a fast broadband connection. The councils are often willing to assist in the laying of fibre networks, with some money being donated by the European Social Fund. Other areas are doing it by themselves; tired of waiting for the bigger operators to get it to them. Bigger operators will have to work with the community based projects, and are currently planning on investing money in fibre networks all over the country, as well as upgrading their cable networks.
