Just a few years ago, mobile phones were exactly as the name implied; phones that you could use on the move. Today however, the mobile phone technology is so far advanced that soon, you could be using your phone for just about anything. Popular mobile phone giant Nokia has developed a system whereby you can control your home heating from your phone. If you are running late and want your house to be warm when you come in; you can adjust the temperatures from your car on the way back. Although mobile phones have built-in cameras, only digital cameras can give you decent-looking snapshots. But before you buy your very own digital camera, you must learn some important points on how to choose the right one that will surely fit your needs.

2 basic types of digital camera:

• point & shoot - a single-gadget model that lets user aim, zoom in, press the button and–done. The camera takes care of the rest from taking your pictures and storing them in the memory.
• digital single-lens reflex - or D-SLR is a multi-lenses camera that offers more flexibility and faster response time. This digital camera also produces higher quality in pictures.

If you’re not a professional photographer, you can safely focus your attention on the point & shoot variety. And even if you’re just buying a digital camera just for kicks, you must look for these important features:

• megapixel - minimum must be 6 MP for ordinary photos; or 8 MP for making very large prints
• optical zoom lens quality - models with optical zoom lens gives you many types of shots like telephoto images, landscapes, portraits, and close-up shots. A 3x zoom (or 35mm in photography term) is alright for digital cameras that are intended for casual events. Naturally, a high optical zoom ratio is required should the digital camera be used to shoot views such as landscapes and seascapes, especially while on vacation.
• monitor - LCD screens help you find a view and let you frame the subject. One general rule: the more the pixels, the better the image.
• face detection - is the newest scene setting that lets your digital camera sets proper exposure for great portraits while focusing on people’s faces. Some latest models can focus on 10 or more faces.
• video recorder - or as camrecorder, which can be used to record to up to 30 frames per second. Minimum pixel quality is 640 x 480. High-definition quality videos can have 1280 x 760 pixels.
• more tips - over-all design, size, and weight of digital camera should be observed carefully. The gadget must be easy-to-use such as easy-to-press buttons. Complete accessories: camera body, strap, starter memory card, batteries, battery recharger, USB cable, PC drivers, CD with software.

If you have the budget for a more expensive brand but have more features, go for it. Your digital camera will be in-charge on collection and storing memories of important events in your family so find brand that will serve you best.
